Stony Stratford had 7,872 residents at the 2021 census and sits about five miles from the centre in the north-west corner of the Milton Keynes urban area, straddling Watling Street — the Roman road from London to Chester.

It was a major coaching town: by the early 1800s over thirty mail and stage coaches passed through daily, until the railway killed the trade in 1838. The Cock and The Bull, two adjoining former coaching inns on the high street, are locally claimed as the origin of the phrase. That history left a dense, historic centre with frontages straight onto a busy through road.
