Newport Pagnell is a town of 15,594 at the 2021 census in the north-eastern corner of the Milton Keynes urban area — and it is separated from the rest of it by the M1. That severance is the first thing we plan around, because the approach has to use a crossing rather than going direct.

It is old: recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Neuport, with the Pagnell added when the manor passed to that family. The historic core has the constraints that come with age — frontages onto the road, limited parking, stairs built before modern furniture — while the estates around it are far more straightforward.

Tickford Bridge, built in 1810, is Grade I listed and one of very few cast iron bridges in Britain still carrying modern traffic.
