Quick answer
If you only have a few eligible items and can leave them outside for collection, the council route may be enough. For indoor removals, mixed loads, urgent jobs or awkward access in Milton Keynes, private clearance is usually the more practical option.

What Milton Keynes City Council currently chargesSection titled What%20Milton%20Keynes%20City%20Council%20currently%20charges
Milton Keynes City Council charges for its bulky waste collection service using a points-based system rather than a flat per-item fee. Each item you list is given a points value — small items score fewer points, and larger or heavier items score more — and the total may also include disposal costs where these apply.
Because the price depends on exactly what you list, the council doesn't publish a fixed first-item or additional-item rate: you get an exact total when you complete the online booking form for your address. If you only have a few items in good condition, it's also worth checking whether they can go to a Household Waste Recycling Centre or be reused instead — a recycling centre visit is free and can be booked up to seven days ahead.

Prices and rules are reviewed regularly, so it's worth checking the official page again before you book.
The rules that matter before you bookSection titled The%20rules%20that%20matter%20before%20you%20book
The price is only part of the story. Whether the council's rules actually fit your situation — where items need to go, by when, and what the crew will and won't do — usually decides whether it's worth booking at all.
Where items must be leftSection titled Where%20items%20must%20be%20left
Items must be placed in an accessible position within your property boundary and visible from the street — for example on a driveway, in the front garden or by a bin store — and need to be out by 7am on the day of collection. The council will not go into back gardens.
Collection crews cannot enter your house, flat, apartment or any outbuilding, so everything has to be moved to that boundary spot yourself before they arrive. Items also need to be under six feet long, liftable by a two-person crew, and emptied of their contents — fridges and freezers cleared of food, wardrobes and drawers cleared of clothes, and so on. The service covers ordinary household items only; hazardous waste, car batteries, tyres, sheets of glass and commercial waste are not accepted.
Changes, refunds and assisted collectionsSection titled Changes%2C%20refunds%20and%20assisted%20collections
You can cancel or change a bulky waste booking within 14 days of making it, up to 1pm on the working day before your scheduled collection (Monday to Friday), and get a full refund. Milton Keynes City Council also runs an assisted collection service for residents who can't move their bins or sacks to the boundary, but this covers regular refuse and recycling rounds — it doesn't extend to bulky waste bookings, so items still need to be at the collection point yourself, or with help from family, friends or a private clearance team.

When the council service is usually enoughSection titled When%20the%20council%20service%20is%20usually%20enough
The council route tends to work well when your situation matches its rules closely:
- You have a small number of items already at ground level, or easy to move to the boundary yourself
- Everything is under six feet long and light enough for two people to lift
- Items can be emptied of contents and left out by 7am on the collection day
- You're not in a rush and can work around the 48-hour processing period, or book a set date up to 14 days ahead
- Everything you're getting rid of is on the council's accepted list — no hazardous waste, batteries, tyres, glass or commercial waste
When private clearance is the better optionSection titled When%20private%20clearance%20is%20the%20better%20option
Private clearance tends to make more sense once the job goes beyond what the council route is set up for:
- Items are still inside the house, upstairs, or in a back garden the council crew won't enter
- You have several items or a mixed load of furniture, appliances and general waste, which may need a council officer visit just to get a quote
- You're clearing a whole property for probate, an end of tenancy or a house move and need everything gone in one visit
- Items are oversized, too heavy for a two-person crew, or don't meet the council's rules
- You need a firm, fast date rather than working around the council's processing window

Common questionsSection titled Common%20questions
Is council collection cheaper than private clearance?Section titled Is%20council%20collection%20cheaper%20than%20private%20clearance%3F
It can be, for a small booking of one or two eligible items — the council's points-based pricing scales with what you list. Once you have several items, a mixed load, or anything that needs an officer visit to quote, the gap narrows, because private clearance includes the labour of moving items out of the property in the same price.
Will the council collect items from inside my home?Section titled Will%20the%20council%20collect%20items%20from%20inside%20my%20home%3F
No. Council crews will not enter your house, flat, apartment, outbuilding or back garden. Items need to already be at an accessible spot on your property boundary, such as a driveway or front garden, by 7am on the collection day.
What if I have more items than the council will take in one visit?Section titled What%20if%20I%20have%20more%20items%20than%20the%20council%20will%20take%20in%20one%20visit%3F
The council doesn't publish a fixed item limit, but larger or mixed bookings may need an officer to visit and confirm a price before it's booked in. If you're clearing a full room or property, a private clearance visit that handles everything — including items still inside — is often the more practical option.
